land preparation for pineapple cultivation (educating children)

Donate now

Teaching children about the cultivation of pineapple is an interesting venture as it helps them to become active. It enable kids to gain interest and love for the environment. During our lesson which took place at a pineapple demonstration farm, the kids were drilled on the following. The following are the steps to take when preparing your land for pineapple cultivation.

A)

1) Land clearing:

Remove all trees, shrubs, weeds, and other debris from the planting area. This can be done manually or with the use of machinery.oil testing:

2) Soil Testing

Take soil samples from the planting area and have them tested to determine the pH, nutrient levels and organic matter content of the soil. The Sub Divisional Delegate of Agriculture is better equip on the directive and whereabouts of soil testing machines. This information will be used to make informed decisions about soil amendments and fertilization.

3. Soil amendment:I

f necessary, add lime or other amendments to adjust the soil pH to the ideal range of 5.5 to 6.5. Organic matter can also be added to improve soil structure and fertility.

4. Plowing and harrowing:

Plow the soil to a depth of 60 to 75 cm (23.6 to 30 inches). This will loosen the soil and allow for good root development. Harrow the soil to break up clods and create a fine tilth.

5. Bed forming:

Form raised beds that are 90 to 120 cm (35.4 to 47.2 inches) wide and 15 to 30 cm (5.9 to 11.8 inches) high. The beds should be spaced 60 to 90 cm (23.6 to 35.4 inches) apart.

6. Drainage:

If necessary, install drainage ditches to prevent waterlogging. Pineapple plants are sensitive to waterlogging and will not thrive in poorly drained soils.

7. Weed control:

Endeavor to minimize weeds before planting. Weeds can compete with pineapple plants for nutrients and water.

B) Additional considerations

  • If planting on sloping land, it is important to create terraces to prevent soil erosion
  •  If planting in a cold area, it is important to mulch the plants to protect them from frost.

Conclusively, by ensuring the above steps, your land would properly be prepared for pineapple farming.
